A “complete restoration” of Grove Park and an “internationally recognized” disc golf course are among the updates coming to Jackson, according to Abram Muhammad, the city’s director of the Department of Parks and Recreation.
Muhammad shared the updates during a press conference last week. On Monday, Jackson Mayor Chokwe Antar Lumumba confirmed the disc golf course will open on Thursday with a ribbon cutting event scheduled for 2 p.m.
Located next to the Jackson Zoo in Livingston Park, construction of the 18-hole disc golf course was first approved by the Jackson City Council in August 2023. The council approved spending $29,000 for the project.
Behind pickleball, disc golf is the second-fastest growing sport in the country, Muhammad said.
For those who are unfamiliar, think golf but with frisbees. A player starts at a tee and aims to land a disc inside a chained target basket with as few throws as possible.
Muhammad also said the city is working to get the course internationally recognized, that way state, national and international tournaments can be hosted.
This will be Jackson’s first disc golf course, joining other Mississippi cities who have constructed courses. According to the Professional Disc Golf Association, the “4th Annual Mississippi Disc Golf Hall of Fame Classic” is scheduled for Oct. 18 in Belden, just outside of Tupelo.
While little details were given besides a renovation of the community center, Grove Park will soon be closed after Martin Luther King Jr. Day for renovations.
“We’re extremely excited about the administration and the council approving a complete restoration for not only the community center, but Grove Park period,” Muhammad said. “We’ve already started breaking ground on some of the endeavors that we’re doing in those restoration efforts.”
Muhammad said his department is shooting to reopen the park in the spring or summer. A community meeting will be hosted in the coming weeks to show what renovations will be made.
“Please be on standby to see when that date will be when we’ll invite you all out to take a look and see the renderings of the future of Grove Park,” he said. “It will have opportunities for everyone from (ages) eight to 80, no matter what your abilities or lack-of-that may be. You’ll be able to enjoy your Grove Park area and we’ll continue to do this throughout the city.”
