Looking for a sleeper College Football Playoff pick? See the Texas A&M Aggies
The college football season is well and truly underway as Week 2 competition gets started on Friday.
And in a year where conference realignment has changed the landscape of college athletics, the question of which teams are in which conference become more prevalent by the week. So it is with the Big 12, which the season has added four teams from the now-defunct Pac-12.
That question will certainly be posed throughout Week 2, including on Friday night, when BYU travels to Dallas for a “Power Four” non-conference matchup with SMU at 7 p.m. ET. The Cougars, who are led by ninth-year coach Kalani Sitake, are in their second season as a member of the Big 12 after competing as independents from 2011-22.

Another notable game on the docket for Week 2 among Big 12 members is the nonconference matchup between Nebraska and Deion Sanders-led Colorado. What would have been a Pac-12-Big Ten meeting last year — and a Big 12 game as recently as 2010 — is now a meeting between the Big 12 and Big Ten.
Elsewhere, Baylor will travel to Salt Lake City to face No. 12 Utah in the Utes‘ first Big 12 regular season game.

Teams are listed in alphabetical order.
There are currently 16 members of the Big 12 Conference with the additions of four Pac-12 programs over the offseason.
The conference previously had 14 members last season, which then included Texas and Oklahoma before they departed for the SEC in July. With the additions of BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF last season — the first of two waves of programs to join the Big 12 — it was the first time the conference had 10 or more teams since 2012. That year, Texas A&M and Missouri left the Big 12 for the SEC.
On Aug. 2, Arizona, Arizona State, Colorado and Utah officially joined the Big 12 Conference. The four programs had previously been part of the Pac-12 Conference, which began to dismantle when USC UCLA (and then Washington and Oregon) decided to leave for the Big Ten.
The decision of the “Four Corner” programs to join the Big 12 was first announced last August.
“We are thrilled to welcome Arizona, Arizona State and Utah to the Big 12,” Big 12 commissioner Brett Yormark said in a statement in 2023. “The conference is gaining three premier institutions both academically and athletically, and the entire Big 12 looks forward to working alongside their presidents, athletic directors, student-athletes and administrators.”
