For Hugh Freeze and the Auburn Tigers’ football team, it’s officially a “get back and get right” week after being stunned by the Cal Golden Bears from Jordan-Hare Stadium on Saturday.
“We never got into any kind of sync offensively,” Freeze said during his postgame press conference. “And that’s very disappointing and frustrating to me and it rests with me and I’ve gotta figure that out for us.”
After the coming week of practice, Auburn (1-1) will look to bounce back against the New Mexico Lobos (0-2) on Saturday night as the Tigers’ Jordan-Hare Stadium is set to play host to an opponent for the third week in a row.
When the Lobos arrive to Auburn in Week 3, they’ll do so coming off an unusually early bye week after opening their season with a Week 0 loss to Montana State on Aug. 24, followed by a more lopsided loss to Arizona in Week 1.
So while the Tigers dropped their Week 2 matchup to the Golden Bears, the Lobos were likely at home watching it happen, while also trying to make the most of their opportunity to rest.
“I think it’s been very beneficial just to get kind of like, our legs back under us and stuff like that,” New Mexico wide receiver Luke Wysong told the Albuquerque Journal. “It’s not just the body from the first two games — it’s the body from camp and summer too, because we just went straight into everything. Just having this time to learn and recover has been huge.”
The Lobos’ 0-2 start to the season comes after going 4-8 (2-4 Mountain West) last fall.
Auburn’s matchup with Cal will be televised on ESPN2 at 6:30 p.m. The radio broadcast will be featured on the Auburn Sports Network.
