Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis attends Tiger Woods’ debut TGL match
Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis was among the attendees for Tiger Woods’ debut with TGL on Tuesday night at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens.
Tiger Woods has brought star power to his TGL golf league. That’s not only on the greens: There’s an all-star roster among team owners, as well.
The indoor golf league based in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, is already a big hit thanks in part to the investment going into it. Woods and co-founder Rory McIlroy helped to bring in a host of celebrities in the sports world to take up ownership among the six teams.
Some of those big names were there last week to see Tiger’s first TGL match. Serena Williams and her husband, Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian, were at SoFi Center to cheer on Los Angeles Golf Club, which they co-own. Soccer star Alex Morgan was there, too; she’s a limited partner for LAGC.
Here’s a look at some of the owners of TGL teams, plus how to watch the next match Tuesday:
Tiger not only is a founding member of TGL and co-owner of Jupiter Links Golf Club, he also plays for the team. The 15-time major champion’s ownership stake comes via his TGR Ventures. The team’s other owner is David Blitzer, co-founder of Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, which runs the NBA’s Philadelphia 76ers and NHL’s New Jersey Devils.
The Williams sisters, legends of the tennis world, are co-owners of Los Angeles Golf Club. They were born in Compton, California, but trained in Delray Beach and still live in Palm Beach County, calling Tiger Woods their neighbor. Venus is a seven-time Grand Slam singles champ, while Serena is a 23-time champ, third all-time for men and women. Alexis Ohanian, Serena’s husband and co-founder of Reddit, is also a co-owner of LAGC.
The U.S. soccer star is a limited partner with LAGC. Morgan was the central scorer on two World Cup winners and played for the Orlando Pride in the NWSL from 2016-2021, retiring this past season with the San Diego Wave.
“The Greek Freak” is another limited partner with LAGC, along with his brothers. Antetokounmpo won the NBA MVP award in 2019 and 2020 and was named NBA Finals MVP after his Milwaukee Bucks won the 2021 championship.
The LPGA icon is another LAGC limited partner. Wie West burst onto the scene when she went pro at 15 years old, playing in select PGA Tour events and winning the 2014 U.S. Women’s Open.
Three members of the dynasty Golden State Warriors are members of Avenue Sports Fund, which owns The Bay Golf Club. The group was founded by Marc Lasry, former owner the Milwaukee Bucks. Curry, Thompson and Iguodala won three NBA titles together from 2015-2018, with the “Splash Brothers” winning a fourth in 2022. Curry is a two-time league MVP, and he and Iguodala both won Finals MVP awards.
Hedge fund manager Steve Cohen owns New York Golf Club. He is also the principal owner of the New York Mets of MLB.
Blank is owner of Atlanta Drive GC. He is most known for running the NFL’s Atlanta Falcons and MLS’ Atlanta United, and he is also co-founder of The Home Depot.
The Fenway Sports Group, led by John Henry and Thomas Werner, runs Boston Common Golf. The group is known primarily as owners of MLB’s Boston Red Sox, and it also runs Liverpool FC in the English Premier League, the Pittsburgh Penguins of the NHL and RFK Racing in NASCAR.
