Penn State, after making a run to the College Football Playoff semifinals, is unsurprisingly well-represented on the various All-CFP performers teams released by various media outlets on Wednesday. On offense, running back Nicholas Singleton is nearly a unanimous pick. He is not on Associated Press’ team. But, he is on the teams from Sports Illustrated, CBS Sports, and The Athletic. Over three games, he piled up 261 rushing yards and five touchdowns. He also had four receptions for 40 yards.
“Singleton was Penn State’s offense in its semifinal loss to the Irish,” Will Backups writes for CBS. “He had all three of the Nittany Lions’ touchdowns.”
To the surprise of no one, All-American and John Mackey Award winning tight end Tyler Warren is a unanimous selection across the four outlets.
“The winner of the John Mackey Award as college football’s top tight end scored two touchdowns in Penn State’s 31-14 Fiesta Bowl victory over Boise State,” Steve Megargee writes for the AP. “Although Penn State got no catches from its wideouts in the Orange Bowl, Warren juiced the Nittany Lions’ offense by catching six passes for 74 yards and running for 21 yards on two carries. He totaled 16 receptions for 171 yards and three carries for 27 yards in three playoff games.”
Moving to the offensive line, right tackle Nolan Rucci made the AP’s team. And, guard Vega Ioane is on SI’s list.
On the defensive side of the ball, All-American defender Abdul Carter is a unanimous selection. Safety Zakee Wheatley made three of the four teams. And, defensive end Dani Dennis-Sutton is on two of the four.
“Most players deal with a physical ailment by season’s end. But, Carter fought through a serious shoulder injury to play outstanding football against Notre Dame,” Scott Dochterman writes for The Athletic. “Carter, who lined up at defensive end and linebacker, sat out most of the win against Boise State and was a game-time decision against the Irish, but ended up with five tackles, two TFLs, one sack, one breakup and one quarterback hurry. It’s not a stretch to say he was the best player on the field that night … or perhaps in the entire CFP.”
Last but least, we will note that Wheatley is an honorable mention pick on SI’s list. So, too, is running back Kaytron Allen.
