There’s nothing quite like getting some physical activity in to start the day off right, New Year’s resolutions aside.
The best way to make sure you will be able to lift some weights, run on the treadmill, or take a Zumba class to kick off the new year is by figuring out when your gym will be open, or if it will be open at all.
Some gyms may be closed completely, while others may offer members the ability to get a workout in during adjusted hours. Banks, retail stores, restaurant chains, and even post offices tend to close or adopt limited hours to observe a number of holidays, including New Year’s Day.
Here’s what you need to know about the hours of operation for major fitness facilities, including Planet Fitness, Gold’s Gym, and YMCA, and whether or not they will be open.
New Year’s Day falls on Wednesday, Jan. 1 this year.
The easiest way to find out if your local Planet Fitness will be open is by searching for your location and verifying the hours posted here.
All Planet Fitness locations are independently owned and operated by individual franchise owners, so hours may vary by location.
“At Planet Fitness, we believe it’s important to stay active during the holiday season and with the PF Black Card you can bring a family member or friend with you for free and enjoy a workout together before your holiday gathering,” Planet Fitness said in a statement.
Most, if not all, 24-Hour Fitness locations will close at 6 p.m. local time on New Year’s Eve and reopen at its usual time or 5 a.m. local time for the 24/7 club on New Year’s Day. You should still verify the hours of operation for your specific location because there can be some variation from club to club.
A “big thing for us during this time is the ability to bring someone in via a buddy pass in an existing membership or sign up for a full year BOGO, getting an entire membership/workout buddy/accountability partner for free for 2025,” 24-Hour Fitness said in a statement. “Holidays are about spending time together and that definitely includes the gym!”
Yes. All Life Time locations will open at 6 a.m. local time and close at 11 p.m. local time on New Year’s Day.
“No matter where people are or what their schedules look like this holiday season, the free Life Time app can help them stay healthy,” the health club chain said in a statement. “Featuring livestream and on-demand workouts that people can use at a time that’s convenient for them, the app is available to anyone, not just Life Time members.”
All Gold’s Gym hours will vary by location, so check with your local gym for specific hours or a change in hours, the gym franchiser said in a statement to USA TODAY.
To find out if the Fitness Center at your local Y is open, or if they will be offering modified hours, contact them directly.
