While Feb. 5 is the next National Signing Day for high school football players, it is not the first such date of the school year.
Thirty-four central Ohio players signed with colleges during the early signing period Dec. 4-6, finalizing their commitments and, in some cases, paving the way to graduate ahead of schedule and join their college programs in time for winter classes.
Such a move allows players to train with their teams throughout the winter and participate in spring football rather than joining shortly before the regular season begins.
One central Ohio player, Westerville North offensive lineman Jake Cook, signed with Ohio State and graduated early.
Four more players are heading to Big Ten schools and five will play in the Mid-American Conference.
Youngstown State, whose director of football operations is former Pickerington North coach Tom Phillips, had the single biggest haul from the area with seven signees. Phillips’ brother, Doug, is the Penguins’ head coach.
