Talks that new US President elect Donald Trump could resolve the long running dispute between the PGA Tour and Saudi backed LIV Golf in ‘a matter of fifteen minutes’ will be put to one side the one off ‘Showdown’ between players from each organisation face off in Vegas on 17 December.
The made for television event set to be staged at the Shadow Creek course in Las Vegas is a one off competition between players representing both golfing institutions. Rory McIlroy and Scottie Scheffler from the PGA with Bryson DeChambeau and Brooks Koepka from LIV.
‘The Showdown’ will be played over 18 holes and will be scored via match-play rather than stroke play.
In match-play golf, the duos will compete against each other on every hole, with the winner of that hole taking a point.
The pair with the most points at the end wins.
The staging of such an event also suggests that the division between both the PGA and LIV may have narrowed somewhat over the past few months.
There is no prize money for the winners but all four contestants are expected to pick up a handsome appearance fee rumoured to be worth $4M per player.
“I’m thrilled to partner with Scottie in what promises to be an exciting duel against Bryson and Brooks in Vegas this December.
“This isn’t just a contest between some of golf’s major champions; it’s an event designed to energise the fans.
“We’re all here to put on a great show and contribute to a goodwill event that brings the best together again.
