With both players expected to be competing in their final Olympics, this is a must-watch showdown, with Nadal also confirming he is considering retirement.
Djokovic eased to a straight-sets win over Australian Matthew Ebden in the first round, while Nadal eventually beat Hungarian Marton Fucsovics 6-1 4-6 6-4.
Nadal is also through to the second round of the doubles action alongside Wimbledon champion Carlos Alcaraz. The Spanish duo will next face Dutch pair Tallon Griekspoor and Wesley Koolhof.
In a quirk of the draw, Alcaraz will first face Griekspoor in the singles competition, but it is his countryman who will likely dominate the attention on Day 3.

This match is the 60th meeting between Djokovic and Nadal, with Djokovic leading the head-to-head 30-29. Their last meeting was at the French Open in 2022 where they played in the quarterfinals.
Nadal prevailed in the four-hour match, winning in four sets (6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6) before going on to win his 14th title at Roland Garros.
The king of the clay returns to his stomping ground at Roland-Garros looking for a second gold medal in the singles competition, after he won the title at Beijing 2008. It would be his third gold medal overall, having also won the doubles at Rio 2016.
Djokovic is seeking his first gold medal — his only Olympic success came with a bronze in 2008. He lost to Nadal that year in the semifinals on the Spaniard’s way to the gold.
Nadal has appeared in three Olympic Games across his stellar career, with medals won in 2008 in Beijing and 2016 in Rio.
He won gold in the men’s singles in 2008, defeating Chilean Fernando Gonzalez, but he missed out on a singles bronze medal in 2016, after losing to Kei Nishikori.
However, he scooped gold in the 2016 doubles event, alongside Marc Lopez.
