With the NCAA’s winter transfer portal for undergraduates closed since Dec. 28, most college football rosters are set for the 2025 season.

Spring practices are soon to get underway, with teams allowed up to 15 practices each offseason. Spring games are included in those 15 practices, although some programs are going away from, or considering getting rid of, the annual offseason scrimmage.

Injuries or positional needs do crop up during the spring, which is where the spring transfer portal comes in.

The spring transfer portal serves as the last time college football programs can add players from other schools to join their team ahead of the next season. A majority of high school signees enroll for the spring semester and graduate high school early, while some make it to campus in the summer ahead of their freshman year.

There tends to be a few surprises in the spring transfer portal each season, a commonality in the modern era of college football.

Here’s a look at when the spring transfer portal opens, and how long players can enter if they choose to move on:

When does spring transfer portal open?

The spring transfer portal window lasts from April 16 through April 25 in 2025. The window is only open for football and no other sports.

Players must enter the transfer portal on any of the dates, but don’t have to commit or sign to their next school inside the window.

The spring transfer portal window is shorter than in years past, as the transfer portal windows were shortened by a combined 15 days across the winter and spring windows, in hopes to bring less surprises and more consistency for programs.

FBS and FCS oversight committees attempted to remove the spring transfer portal window to help keep rosters together, but the move lost steam and doesn’t seem like it’ll be going away anytime soon.

There are a few exceptions to both transfer portal windows, as graduates can enter the transfer portal at any time, and players on teams with head coaches that were fired receive a 30-day window, as well.
