Purdue basketball is struggling mightily as UCLA visits on Friday, Feb. 28, 2025.
The No. 19 Boilermakers (19-9, 11-6) have lost four straight games for the first time in five years as their defense has disappeared. Though Purdue has allowed 70.5 points per game in Big Ten play (3rd), opponents have shot 53.8% from the field and scored 79.3 points during the losing streak. Also, no one has stepped up consistently enough offensively to help Trey Kaufman-Renn, Braden Smith and Fletcher Loyer, who combine to average 48.9 points per game.
The Bruins (20-8, 11-6) have alternated wins and losses the past couple of weeks, beating Ohio State last weekend. Before that, UCLA won seven consecutive games. The Bruins allow 69.1 points per game in conference play (2nd).
Both teams pride themselves in protecting the ball while taking it from opponents. Purdue leads the Big Ten with 7.5 steals in conference games while owning a +2.7 turnover margin (3rd). UCLA gets 7.4 steals (2nd) has a +3.7 turnover margin (1st).

Boilers need a bounce-back game from Braden Smith because the Bruins are too good not to capitalize on another turnover-laden night. That hasn’t really been a problem at Mackey, though.
8 p.m. ET Friday, Feb. 28, 2025, at Mackey Arena in West Lafayette, Indiana.
The game is sold out, but tickets are available on StubHub starting at $114.
