GREENVILLE, S.C. (FOX Carolina) – Thanksgiving week makes two months since Hurricane Helene’s historic landfall on the Carolinas.
Leaving many with damage to their property, homes and cars.
Fox Carolina sat down with an Upstate insurance agent who said, make sure you understand the coverage available to you and you know what questions to ask.
Ken Grether is a sales executive at SC Insurance Brokerage. Grether has been in the business for 39 years.
He tells Fox Carolina, when looking at insurance, coverage education should be at the top of the list. If you have insurance already, don’t be afraid to ask your agent…
-How am I covered against tree and car damage?
-How do I file a claim if something happens?
-What is actually covered under my current plan.
Grether said, “the best question a consumer can ask is would you please evaluate the current insurance that I have and do you think in today’s marketplace that these are appropriate coverage’s and if not can you help me with what is.“
An example he used, was car insurance. Knowing the in’s and out’s of your plan.
South Carolina requires you have to have basic liability insurance. Basic liability covers bodily injury per-person, per-accident and property damages per-accident.
Grether said, you can then take it a step further. Adding collision and/or comprehensive coverage.
Collision covers damages to your car when you hit something. While Comprehensive coverage is everything else. Including Fire, hail damage, a tree falling on your car, flood, theft or vandalism, windshield damage, accidents with animals, etc.
He tells Fox Carolina, it is important to protect your investment, and find and agent that cares.
“What we are seeing unfortunately is too many people maybe going online and trying to do their own coverage because its expensive and they are deleting coverage’s they don’t understand and then they are surprised that they have not coverage. Maybe they are calling a 1-800 number. I would say if an insurance professional isn’t going over your coverage then they need to find somebody that is.”
Another thing not to be afraid of Grether said, is being clear about your budget without compromising on coverage. Find an agent that works for you and is willing to walk through each plan and its coverage with you.
