The Commanders are having their best season in more than 30 years, and a big reason why is due to their ownership change. Dan Snyder sold the franchise after 25 years at the helm, with Josh Harris taking over as the managing partner of the team.
Harris is no stranger to owning professional sports teams, as he’s purchased several franchises across the big four sports landscape. That made him a strong candidate to replace Snyder in what was a dysfunctional situation at the time of the sale.

Josh Harris owns three professional sports teams, as he is the majority owner for the Philadelphia 76ers, New Jersey Devils and Washington Commanders. He also owns a minority stake in the Crystal Palace Football Club.
Harris bought his first professional team in 2011, when he won the bid to buy the 76ers from Ed Snider Comcast-Spectacor. Along with his business partner David Blitzer, Harris’ ownership group spent $280 million to buy the team. In Harris time as owner, the 76ers have made the playoffs eight times, including an active streak of seven straight seasons, but they haven’t made it past the second round.
Two years later, in 2013, Harris and Blitzer came together to buy the Devils from Joe Vanderbeek for $320 million. In more than a decade with Harris as the owner, the Devils have made the playoffs just twice and haven’t made it past the second round.
After 10 years as an owner of two different sports teams, Harris added a third to his ledger when he led the acquisition of the Commanders from Dan Snyder. In July of 2024, Harris’ group officially bought Washington for $6.05 billion, which is a record number for American sports teams.
Unlike the 76ers and Devils, the Commanders made it to the conference championship in just Harris’ first year with the team.
Harris became a billionaire for his work in private equity. In 1990, Harris was a cofounder of Apollo Global Management along with Leon Black and Marc Rowan, and Harris remained a part of the investment firm until 2021 when he stepped down from the board.
In 2017, after already buying the 76ers and Devils, Harris and David Blitzer started Harris Blitzer Sports and Entertainment, a sports and venue management firm used to run their sports teams.
Harris’s net worth is $11.1 billion, according to Forbes.
