Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray will join forces when the Brit joins his former rival’s coaching team.
The tennis world was left stunned when it was announced that Murray will join Djokovic’s coaching team.
Just three months after Murray retired from tennis at the Paris Olympics Games, he will now begin his coaching career with a move nobody saw coming.
The pair who were once rivals will now work together in a bid to help Djokovic get back into the Grand Slam winners’ circle after failing to win a major in 2024.
One of Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray’s most memorable matches took place in the final of the US Open.
Djokovic was aiming to successfully defend the title, while Murray was trying to claim the first Grand Slam title of his career.
In a match that was affected by strong winds, Murray and Djokovic contested a five-set duel in New York, which began with the Brit opening up a two-set lead.
Djokovic stormed back to level the match, before Murray dominated the final set and sealed a 7-6(10) 7-5 2-6 3-6 6-2 victory to become the first British man to win a major since Fred Perry in 1936.
Post-match, Djokovic explained what he told Murray after they shook hands at the net following their near five-hour battle.
“What I said is what I said to you, that he deserves to win and I’m glad that he has won this trophy, I mean it,” Djokovic said. “I mean, it must feel great for him. It’s his first Grand Slam.”
The classy gesture probably went some way to ensuring that Murray’s relationship with Djokovic remained strong throughout their careers.
Despite the rivalries there was always a great respect between the pair, who competed at the top of the rankings for so many years, and has led to them teaming up now that the Scot has ended his playing career.
From Djokovic and Murray’s 36 meetings, 10 of them have taken place at a Grand Slam.
Murray won on just two occasions, with his US Open final victory being one of them. The Brit’s second and final victory over Djokovic at a major came in the 2013 Wimbledon final.
Murray had lost to Roger Federer in the 2012 championship match and he was determined to go on better the following year.
Carrying the hopes of an entire nation on his shoulders, Murray defeated 6-4 7-5 6-4 to become Britain’s first male Wimbledon since Fred Perry in 1936.
Their final meeting at a Grand Slam came in the 2016 French Open final, when Djokovic claimed a four-set triumph to win his first French Open and complete the career Grand Slam.
