Carlos Alcaraz is the 2024 Wimbledon men’s singles champion after a straight-sets victory over Novak Djokovic. The Spanish star had looked set for a stress-free triumph but passed up two match points in the 10th game of the third set, before going on to clinch a 6-2, 6-2, 7-6 victory.
Djokovic was subdued during the opening two sets, in which the Spaniard sparkled. A break down in the third set, the Serb rallied to take it to a tie-break, which Alcaraz won to retain the title he won last year.
Despite his victory, the 21-year-old will remain in third place in the ATP world rankings, behind Djokovic and world No. 1 Jannik Sinner. The official update will be issued on Monday, July 15 but this is how the ATP rankings will look after the conclusion of the Wimbledon Championships.
Alcaraz has now won four Grand Slam titles in his career, with his two Wimbledon victories joining wins at the US Open in 2022 and the French Open earlier this year.
The young Spaniard will now turn his attention to the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, where he will compete in the men’s singles and men’s double events alongside the legendary Rafael Nadal.
