La’Rayah Davis was found dead in Cierre Wood’s home, just weeks after having moved in with her mother Amy Taylor.
Wood, 33, was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 10 years.
After reaching a plea deal with prosecutors, he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and felony child abuse of his girlfriend’s 5-year old daughter.
According to the news sources, Clark County District Court Judge Jacqueline Bluth ordered that Wood also serve between 28 months and six years for the felony child abuse charge, consecutively.
In April 2019, Davis was found dead and Taylor told police at the that time that she sat on her child while disciplining her.
Wood told them he used exercise as discipline and that the child fell backward doing sit-ups, hitting her head on carpeted floor, according to reports.
Both, Wood and Taylor,31, were indicted on murder in June of 2019 and pleaded out to second-degree murder and felony child abuse charges. According to the reports, Wood entered what is known as an Alford plea, a formal admission of guilt in criminal court that allows a defendant to still claim innocence.
The autopsy report revealed revealed that Davis had 20 broken ribs, internal bleeding, a lacerated liver and bruises to her heart, diaphragm and connective tissue. She died of blunt force injuries
Wood was a running back that went undrafted out of Notre Dame in 2013 but went on to play with the Texans, Patriots, Seahawks and the Bills. He also spent time in the Canadian Football league.
