The question of whether SEC men’s basketball could get 13 or even 14 teams into the NCAA Tournament will get an important data point this week.
With its March Madness hopes in peril, Oklahoma will host No. 23 Kentucky Wednesday night at the Lloyd Noble Center in Norman, Oklahoma.

After winning their first 13 games and rising as high as No. 10 in the USA TODAY Sports Coaches Poll, the Sooners have struggled, with just a 4-10 record in SEC play. Four of their past five losses have come by at least 15 points, though a victory last Saturday against then-No. 23 Mississippi State stopped the metaphorical bleeding, at least temporarily.
Coach Porter Moser’s team was listed as one of the last four teams in the field in the latest bracketology from USA TODAY Sports, receiving a No. 12 seed and facing off against fellow No. 12 seed San Diego State in a play-in game.
The rigors of SEC play have also taken their toll on Kentucky, which is 4-6 in its past 10 games while dealing with a slew of injuries to notable players for much of that run. Defensive ace Lamont Butler has missed six of the Wildcats’ past eight games while No. 2 scorer Jaxson Robinson has been sidelined for the past four games. Both players were listed as probable on the SEC athlete availability report, as of Wednesday afternoon.
The game will be a reunion of sorts for Kentucky’s leading scorer, Otega Oweh, who played the previous two seasons at Oklahoma before transferring.

Prediction: Kentucky 87, Oklahoma 83
The Sooners are desperate to enhance an NCAA Tournament resume that has gotten shaky over the past two months, but the Wildcats, presuming Robinson and Butler play, should have enough firepower to get past Oklahoma, though coach Mark Pope’s team is winless in its past three road games.
