Through a FOIA request to the North Dakota Racing Commission, I have confirmed the following kills at that state’s two tracks last year. (Please note: North Dakota is among the lightest of racing states, with but 16 racedays last year.)

“Went down with a severe injury to her back and was humanely destroyed while still on the track.” The chart, by the way, simply said, “failed to finish.” Lake was six years old.

No details were provided on Gotta’s death, but it was probably related to his final race, which came just four days prior. He was just two years old.
