Bryce Young makes his third start this season as Panthers quarterback while Andy Dalton recovers from a thumb injury sustained in a car accident earlier this week. In Young’s first two starts, the Panthers scored a combined 13 points, while Young threw for 0 TDs and 3 INTs. His first start back under center won’t be an easy one, as he gets a road game against the league’s stingiest defense. Young draws a Broncos defense that is the best in the league, allowing just 4.4 yards per play. The Broncos likely know the only way they’ll lose this game is if they turn the ball over and set up the Panthers for easy points. I expect an ultra-conservative approach from the Broncos and a Panthers team that will struggle to score double-digits.
Week 8 NFL Best Bet – Under 42
Deshaun Watson is out for the season, so Jameis Winston enters for the Browns. That is the majority of my enthusiasm for the Browns here, as Watson was not playing at the level of a respectable NFL quarterback. Winston should not only raise the level of play under center for the Browns, but his presence should also boost the rest of the team that realized how hopeless things were with Watson. Tough spot for the Ravens, as well, as they’re on the road on a short week following a road win against the Bucs on Monday Night Football. The Ravens have also had recent high-profile games against the Bills, Bengals, and local rival Commanders. This is a lot of points for what should be a rejuvenated Browns squad with the new starting quarterback.
Week 8 NFL Best Bet: Cleveland Browns +9
The Dolphins have been unwatchable since losing QB Tua Tagavailoa in Week 2 against the Bills. However, a broken offense should be fixed by Tua’s return this Sunday against the Cardinals. The Dolphins, even with Tua, have struggled against elite competition, but they have excelled at throttling mediocre and bad defenses. The Cardinals are dead-last in the NFL, allowing 7.9 yards per pass, and now, on a short week, visit what is a heathy and hungry Dolphins offense. The summer line for this game was closer to 7, and with Tua back under center against a bad Cardinals pass defense, the current line of 4 is low enough to trigger a bet on the Dolphins.
Week 8 NFL Best Bet: Miami Dolphins -4
College Football Week 9 Bonus Pick:
Many people will see a service academy getting two touchdowns and be inclined to bet the underdog, especially in a season where Army and Navy have been so proficient covering spreads. However, the step up in competition is too much for me to overlook here. Navy has played the likes of Air Force, UAB, Charlotte, and even surrendered 44 points to a mediocre Memphis team. The Irish will be too big and too potent offensively for Navy to slow down. Notre Dame team total over 32.5 is a good bet as well, but I’ll lay the 14 in what I think will be a blowout.
College Football Week 9 Best Bet: Notre Dame -14
