There’s a six-pack of stakes for horseplayers to look forward to on the Horseshoe Indianapolis Wednesday card. My analyses of the Cardinal Handicap and To Much Coffee Stakes are part of my weekly quintet of picks.
Best bet: Corningstone (race 9)
Best value bet: Positive Change (race 6)
Race 1
No. 7 Goldwyn (8-5, morning-line favorite) also is entered in the Circle City Stakes later in the card but is 8-1 there and likely will run in this much softer spot. This son of Maximus Mischief didn’t miss earning the diploma by much at first asking and shortens up a 16th here, which figures to help. No. 6 Conference Calling (5-1) didn’t cost much at auction but shows several sharp works for Tim Eggleston, who wins with 11 percent of his firsters. No. 10 Jackson’s Buddy (6-1) is training forwardly for his debut and has a potent pairing behind him in Emmanuel Esquivel and Cipriano Contreras, who have won seven of their last 28 races as a team.
How I’d bet it (based on a $100 budget): $10 exacta 7/6,10
Race 5
No. 2 Broadway Lights (4-1) did not have a clear late run and was probably better than third when last seen. This Brad Cox runner should get the job done with a clean trip. No. 5 Stubby (7-2, morning-line favorite) was a decent third here vs. tougher two back before faltering late at Kentucky Downs. No. 4 Kate Wins (10-1) finished with late interest and wasn’t beaten all that much by the top choice last time out.
How I’d bet it: $8 exacta 2/4,5, $4 exacta 5/2
Race 6
No. 5 Positive Change (4-1) makes sense if you eliminate his last-out turf effort. He’s drilled well for his return to dirt and owns a recent blowout win and runner-up result over this course. No. 4 Rocketing (8-1) handled a significant jump in class to graduate from the maiden ranks last time out, and his trip was anything but smooth. The stretchout and jump up the class ladder could hurt him, but you’re getting fair odds here on the promising son of Unbridled Express. No. 3 Theo’s Promise (5-1) has hit the board in three straight tries on dirt.
How I’d bet it: $7 exacta 5/3,4, $3 exacta box 4/5
Race 9
No. 4 Corningstone (9-5, morning-line favorite) has been well-traveled this year but cut her teeth at Horseshoe Indianapolis, where she started her career 4-for-6 with two seconds. The daughter of Kantharos outran her odds when finishing second in the Grade 2 Locust Grove at Churchill Downs last time out, but the speed figure she earned there doesn’t seem like an aberration. No. 10 Brittanysgldnfaith (5-2) blew away a similar field last time out with by far a career-best speed figure, but it’s possible she’s wanted a route of ground this whole time. No. 3 Itzforever (10-1) brings solid, consistent form into the Cardinal Handicap and can land a share.
How I’d bet it: $12 exacta 4/10, $8 exacta 4/3
Race 10
No. 4 Demolisher (5-2, morning-line favorite) has begun his career 4-for-4 and fired a sharp five-furlong work ahead of this outing. I’m not sure how long this son of Dominus truly wants to go, but he’s clearly talented enough to take this. No. 12 King Ice (12-1) could be the value of the race getting Marcelino Pedroza aboard. He’s stepping up off a highly rated allowance win but is the defending champion of the To Much Coffee Stakes. No. 9 Highest Memories (8-1) is a head away from having five wins in his last five starts here, and Santo Sanjur will have tactical options on this one. No. 10 Zolo (7-2) is a first-or-last type (15: 8-1-2 lifetime record) who is fast enough to beat these on his best day. But he’s not truly stakes-tested like his main rivals, forcing me to rank him a bit lower at this price.
How I’d bet it: $5 exacta 4/9,10,12, $1 exacta 9,10,12/4, $2 win 12
