Next, winner of six straight races, worked Wednesday morning ahead of an expected return in the Grade 3 Greenwood Cup at Parx on Sept. 21.
The 6-year-old gelding trained by Doug Cowan breezed five furlongs in 1:01.2 at Turfway Park, third fastest of 17 at the distance.
Cowan told BloodHorse.com last month that he would point Next to the 1 1/2-mile race for a shot at a repeat win. The timing also would work for the Breeders’ Cup, where the Classic and the Turf are options, according to the report.
Next was one of four graded-stakes winners with published works Wednesday.
