Cullowhee, N.C. – Western Carolina men’s golf concludes the fall portion of its 2024-25 schedule this weekend as the Catamounts divide the nine-man roster to compete in two tournaments separated by nearly 100 miles between North and South Carolina.
The Catamount scoring five heads to Greenville, S.C., to play in the 54th annual Furman Intercollegiate, plotting 54 holes over two days this weekend with a team and individual champion to be crowned at the par-71, 7,131-yard Furman University Golf Course. WCU sends its remaining four golfers on the roster to the App State Individual at the Cedar Rock Country Club in Lenoir, N.C., for 36 holes of competition featuring 18 holes on both days vying for medalist honors.
In addition to the Catamounts and host Paladins, the 15-team field at the Furman Intercollegiate consists of golfers from Campbell, Davidson, Francis Marion, Gardner-Webb, Georgia State, High Point, James Madison, Richmond, #27 Texas A&M, #12 USC Aiken (NCAA D-II), #34 Wake Forest, Western Kentucky, and Wofford.
Among the field, two teams – Texas A&M and Wake Forest – are ranked inside the men’s golf Top 50 entering the week, joined by No. 60 Furman and No. 81 Campbell. Western Carolina (No. 132) ranks higher than six of the teams entered this weekend. The Catamount scoring five is led by sophomore Jace Butcher as the No. 1 seed, followed by newcomers junior transfer Callum Waugh and freshman Chase Cline in the second and third flights. Junior Ivan Ninkovic will play as WCU’s No. 4 with sophomore Andrew Korytoski claiming the fifth spot through the team’s weekly qualifying.
Paired with golfers from James Madison and Richmond, WCU’s scoring five hits the course between the fourth and sixth holes on Saturday with an 8:30 a.m. shotgun start for 36 holes of continuous play. Sunday’s final round of 18 holes will have set tee times by score beginning at 8:20 a.m. off both the No. 1 and No. 10 tees with nine-minute increments. Live scoring is available through the Clippd Scoreboard, linked online at CatamountSports.com.
Western Carolina finished eighth at last year’s Furman Intercollegiate with a three-round score of 869, just two strokes back of seventh-place Gardner-Webb and 10 shots in arrears of the two-way tie for fourth.
The four remaining Catamount men’s golfers face 36 holes of play at the Cedar Rock Country Club in Lenoir, N.C., at the App State Individual. With no team element, the field is scheduled to have 31 total players and features 18 holes apiece on Saturday and Sunday with golfers competing mostly in foursomes with one threesome pairing.
Joining WCU’s foursome – senior Kiefer Bulau, redshirt junior Josh Lendach, and sophomores Michael Bevins and Dalton Payne – a combined eight schools are sending competitors. Each team – minus Davidson which is only sending a Wildcat trio – is entering four golfers in the field including host Appalachian State, Johnson & Wales, Lincoln Memorial, North Carolina Central, and UNCG.
Tee times at Cedar Rock are scheduled to run from 9:40 a.m. to 11:10 a.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on Sunday. Live scoring of the App State Individual will be available online at Golf Genius.
