Tom Brady took a shot at Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield Sunday over comments from the 29-year-old that players on the team were not enjoying themselves with the GOAT at the helm of the franchise.
Brady won his seventh and final Super Bowl in Tampa following the 2020 season after a historic tenure with the New England Patriots. In the first of three seasons with the Bucs, Brady led the team to a championship in Super Bowl LV over the Kansas City Chiefs.
The team paid Mayfield big money after he proved himself last season, taking Tampa to the divisional round after securing first place in the NFC South.
“The building was a little bit different with Tom in there. Obviously, playing-wise, Tom is different. He had everybody dialed in, high-strung environment, so I think everybody was pretty stressed out,” Mayfield told the Casa De Klub podcast. “They wanted me to come in, be myself, bring the joy back to football for guys who weren’t having as much fun.”
Brady fired back Sunday during FOX’s NFL coverage – saying that if he had moved to Florida to have fun, he would have taken his children to Disneyland.
The 47-year-old was read Mayfeiled’s comments on the air and joked he had brought stress into the network’s booth during Tampa Bay’s Sunday home game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
“I thought stressful was not having Super Bowl rings,” Brady joked.
He added, “There was a mindset of a champion that I took to work every day. This wasn’t daycare. If I wanted to have fun, I was gonna go to Disneyland with my kids.”
Brady concluded that in order for NFL teams to reach their full potential, players must exit their “comfort zone” and hold one another to the highest of expectations.
Mayfield finished Sunday’s game by completing 30 of 47 passes for 347 yards and a touchdown as the Bucs cruised to a 33-16 victory.
