After conquering cancer as a teenager, Sherouk Mohamed Morsi takes on a different beast, testing her abilities in the demanding sport of dragon boat racing.
On the command “Go,” the team slices their paddles through the water. The movement is repeated rhythmically, and each stroke is perfectly synchronised—the sport demands it. It takes a team of twenty to keep the dragon boat swiftly moving across the water. Team member Sherouk Mohamed Morsi tells SCENES that dragon boat racing is a test of strength and endurance. There is no stopping or substitution.
A decade ago, Sherouk wouldn’t have imagined she had it in her to twist her torso and expend this much energy. Back then, she was battling cancer and constantly doubted her abilities. According to Sherouk, dragon boating shows her that she is powerful and capable beyond measure.
Dragon boats’ origins can be traced back to southern China, but they only arrived in Qatari waters in 2013. Today, the sport is thriving. Before sunrise on the weekends, dedicated dragon boaters arrive in droves at the beach to paddle.
Sherouk is determined to take the dragon boat scene to the next level. With her teammates, she established Dragon Boat Regatta Qatar, an organisation working hard to enhance the country’s portfolio for the sport.
