The Celtics haven‘t met much resistance to start the season, though the campaign is only two games old so far. But after blowouts over the Knicks then Wizards, those lofty scores allowed C‘s coach Joe Mazzulla to unload his bench. That also meant C‘s rookie Baylor Scheierman got to make his NBA debut in Thursday’s win.
Scheierman had some struggles throughout the preseason, though it‘s still early in his pro career. Regardless, Scheierman is officially in the NBA history books after playing in eight minutes against the Wizards, putting up four points and a rebound. After the victory, Jaylen Brown presented him the game ball. Here’s the video.
Scheierman, 24, was picked 30th overall by the Celtics, earning that guaranteed contract. As of now, it looks like he‘ll be spending more time with the NBA club. If the C’s continue blowing out their opponents, these minutes are valuable reps for guys like Scheierman who are looking to make their mark on the league.
It‘ll be difficult for Scheierman to earn consistent playing time considering the loaded C’s roster. But there‘s a reason the Celtics selected him as he also became Brad Stevens’ first-ever first-round pick made from the front office. Scheierman showed some solid traits at Creighton to close out his college career, though it‘s clear he’s still adjusting to the speed of the NBA game.
Scheierman got his feet wet Thursday, and he‘ll likely get more playing opportunities considering it’s a long season. The C‘s hope he can develop behind-the-scenes throughout his rookie year, which has been the case for newcomers. That‘s life on the defending champs, where minutes are at a premium since the roster is so good. But that’s also a plus for growing players like Scheierman since those practice reps will be high-quality.
