City of Troy, winner of the Group 1 Derby at Epsom, galloped Friday at Southwell Racecourse as he continues his training toward an expected start in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

City of Troy went a mile on the Tapeta at Southwell under regular jockey Ryan Moore. To simulate race conditions as much as possible in a workout, he ran in company with four others and they all broke from an American-style starting gate. The racetrack was open to the public for the gallop.

He loaded into the gate with no trouble, and broke well with the front ranks of the pack. Moore then settled him patiently at the rear of the group, keeping him under a hold. He shifted out around the turn and imporoved position, came into the lane three wide between horses, and took the lead in upper stretch before being asked for much. City of Troy then opened up through the wire while ridden along by Moore.

His workmates included Congo River, Democracy, Master of the Hunt and Edwardian. All of his workmates were fellow sophomores except for Congo River, who is a 4-year-old. All are maiden winners, though none of the workmates are proven in stakes company, much less have they shown the talent of City of Troy.

Winner of the Dewhurst (G1) at age 2, City of Troy disappointed in his 3-year-old debut in the 2000 Guineas (G1) at Newmarket in May but has been unstoppable since. The son of Justify bounced back to win the Derby at 1 1/4 miles, and has since toppled older horses in both the Coral-Eclipse (G1) at Sandown and the Juddmonte International (G1) at York.

O’Brien has started 17 horses in the Breeders’ Cup Classic, most recently Mendelssohn, who finished fifth in 2018. The highest-placed finish by an Aidan O’Brien trainee came in 2000, when Giant’s Causeway finished second, a neck behind Tiznow. He also trained Declaration of War, who ran third in the 2013 Breeders’ Cup Classic, a head behind winner Mucho Macho Man.
