PRINCESS ANNE, Md. – Washington High School’s fitness center received major upgrades, with additions like brand new weights, multi-use bench presses and advanced technology air bikes, all to the tune of $50,000 dollars.
The project came to life with the help of Wellpoint Maryland and the Impact Fitness Foundation, two organizations looking to enhance the quality of fitness for students.
“This will pay dividends for years and hopefully decades to come, with the students and staff and community that can come through this fitness center,” said President of Wellpoint MD, Dr. Darrell Gray.
“Your fitness space needs to be motivating. When you walk into this room, you have to get excited, you have to be fired up to actually do the work that you need to put in,” said President of the Impact Fitness Foundation, Chris Welsh.
And motivating it is. Head football coach, Alec Meintzer, saw it was time to be out with the old and in with the new, replacing worn, hand-me-down equipment with colorful, up-to-date pieces, to help motivate students during their workouts and revitalize the athletics department.
“We have good sports programs, and we have programs that are kind of recovering and building,” Meintzer said. “I’m hoping that with the addition of this that we can take a huge step towards every sports program here, being monumentally better.”
And 11th grader, Jason Elliott, is looking forward for the students who come after him to take advantage of this new and improved facility.
“I feel like this will help way more than everybody can think,” Elliott said. “The weights, the room, the improvements itself, I feel like it’s going to bring everybody together.”
