According to Athlon Sports’ Steven Lassan, Jedd Fisch’s coaching staff has done a strong job rebuilding the Washington Huskies‘ roster. Ahead of the 2025 season, Lassan placed the Huskies at No. 23 in roster talent after the coaching staff pulled in a strong recruiting and transfer portal class.
By Athlon’s rankings, the Huskies are No. 7 in the Big Ten in total talent ahead of the spring transfer portal window, trailing Ohio State, Oregon, Michigan, USC, Penn State, and Nebraska. The publication had Washington at No. 47 on the list in 2024 and, curiously enough, the 2025 roster is sitting three spots above coach Kalen DeBoer’s 2023 national championship runner-up, which was ranked No. 26 in total talent.
The Huskies got some help in terms of total talent by retaining the services of running back Jonah Coleman, who was eligible for the NFL draft, while also retaining Denzel Boston, who could continue to assert himself among the best receivers in the Big Ten in 2025.
Plus, with quarterback Demond Williams Jr. taking over as the starter, Fisch did one thing he was unable to do before his first season on Montlake, and he utilized the winter transfer portal period to add talent along the offensive line.
Washington added one of the top available tackles in the transfer portal, Kansas State’s Carver Willis, and also made significant improvements to the front seven, which was just as big of a weakness in 2024. They added a trio of experienced linebackers and three defensive linemen who look like they could improve the strength and physicality of the front.
Fisch also added one of his best players from his time at Arizona, Tacario Davis, who was ranked as the best cornerback in the transfer portal. Combined with Northern Arizona safety Alex McLaughlin, who was rated as a four-star transfer by On3, secondary coach John Richardson looks like he made significant improvements to his group, even after losing All-Big Ten honorable mention Thaddeus Dixon to the portal.
Most of Washington’s struggles can be attributed to a few issues: a lack of experience along the offensive line and a lack of both depth and physicality along the defensive line. Fisch’s staff made a concerted effort to address those needs ahead of the 2025 season, and it seems to have done a solid job ahead of its second year in Seattle.
