After dropping a season-high three straight games, the Golden State Warriors faced off against the Phoenix Suns on Saturday to start a quick two-game road swing.
Despite the return of Steph Curry to the starting lineup, the Warriors had no answer for the Suns’ long-range jumper in the first half on Saturday in Phoenix. In the first half, the Suns shot 54.8% from the field including a red-hot 14 made 3-pointers through the opening two quarters against the Warriors. Behind sharp shooting from Duke alums Tyus Jones and Grayson Allen, the Suns ran to a 17-point lead at halftime.
While the Suns opened the game with an early haymaker, Curry was quiet early in his return to the court. Curry missed the Warriors’ loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday due to a knee injury. At halftime, Curry scored only two points on 0-of-5 shooting from the field.
Despite a slow start, Curry came alive in the third quarter to spark a run from the Warriors. Curry tallied 15 points with three made triples in the third quarter to cut into Phoenix’s advantage. Behind Curry’s flurry in the third, the Warriors trimmed the Suns’ lead to only seven points by the start of the fourth quarter.
While the game stayed tight through the fourth quarter, each time the Warriors attempted to make a final comeback run, the Suns were able to answer with a shot of their own. Kevin Durant tallied 10 points in the fourth quarter to close out the Warriors, 113-105.
Durant and Devin Booker combined for 48 points for the Suns while Jones added 19 points against the Warriors on Saturday. Curry led the Warriors with 23 points on 8-of-21 shooting from the field with three made triples to go along with seven rebounds and four assists. Andrew Wiggins, Draymond Green, Jonathan Kuminga, Buddy Hield and Brandin Podziemski all notched a double-figure scoring night for the Warriors.
Saturday’s loss to the Suns marked the fourth straight loss for the Warriors. The Warriors’ schedule won’t get any easier with an NBA Cup contest in Denver against Nikola Jokic and the Nuggets coming up on Tuesday.
