After blowing an 18-point lead and eventually falling to the Sacramento Kings on Wednesday night, the Golden State Warriors dropped to 21-22 this season.
With the organization far from contention through 43 games, it may consider shockingly sending a four-time NBA champion to the Detroit Pistons and starting fresh.
“They (Warriors) looked the part before Thanksgiving, sitting at 12-3 atop the Western Conference, but have since fallen back to Earth fast and hard,” NBA Analysis Network’s Jonah Kubicek wrote Wednesday.
“Amid their disappointing season, the Warriors have been urged by some to sell the farm, trade away their veterans, and rebuild around their young talent.”
“While Stephen Curry and Draymond Green are franchise icons who carry some emotional weight, Klay Thompson fled to the Dallas Mavericks, so it can be done.”
“If the Warriors do trade Green, it would have to be to a team that he either has connections to, can use him to compete, or both.”
“While the Warriors fall short of the expectations, the Detroit Pistons have played better than anyone thought.”
“At 22-21, they are alive in the Eastern Conference playoff hunt and will only get better as Cade Cunningham and the rest of the young core comes into their own.”
“Green is a hard-nosed veteran who embodies the “Motor City” teams of the past. He is the ultimate NBA ‘Bad Boy,’ and his fit on the roster is clear.”
“I love that,” said ESPN’s Bobby Marks when Kevin O’Connor floated trading Green to the Detroit Pistons on Tuesday.
“Isaiah Stewart, a first (round pick), and two or three seconds,” was the deal O’Connor offered.
While Green isn’t known for posting jaw-dropping numbers nightly, the accomplished forward makes his presence felt on the hardwood.
From pushing the ball up the floor after missed baskets and reading the floor to tormenting opponents with his relentless defensive attack, Green makes positive plays for Steve Kerr and the Warriors.
Green averages 8.4 points, 6.0 rebounds, 1.1 blocks, and one steal in Year 13.
Unfortunately, Green’s two-way efforts haven’t resulted in high-level team success this season, possibly prompting the Warriors to begin their rebuild early.
Considering the Pistons wouldn’t balk at acquiring an experienced forward who isn’t one-dimensional, a deal involving Golden State, Detroit, and Green could come to fruition before the Feb. 6 trade deadline.
