The 36-year-old cricketer from Delhi made his ODI debut for India on August 18, 2008, against Sri Lanka in Dambulla and since then has played 299 matches. With 14,085 runs to his name, Kohli is the third leading run scorer in the 50-over format of the game, and he scored his 51st ODI century in the last match played against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday, February 23. He remained unbeaten on 100 runs from 111 balls in that fixture and, during his stay at the crease, hammered 7 fours to help India chase down the target of 242 runs in 42.3 overs for the loss of four wickets.
Former India captain Mohammad Azharuddin was the first cricketer to play 300 ODIs. Azhar played his 300th ODI for India against Australia in October 1998. Azhar played a total of 334 matches for India during his 15-year-long career and scored 9378 runs with the help of seven centuries and 58 fifties. In addition to that, he also picked up 12 wickets.
Apart from Azharuddin, Sachin Tendulkar (463), Sourav Ganguly (308), Rahul Dravid (340), MS Dhoni (347), and Yuvraj Singh (301) have also played more than 300 ODIs for India.
The overall record of playing the most ODIs is held by Tendulkar, who, during his 23-year-long ODI career, played 463 matches.
Kohli, who is one of the greatest batters of all time, would like to come up with a big show on Sunday and make his 300th ODI for India a memorable one.
During the match, Kohli will have a chance to break multiple batting records. If the right-handed batter manages to score at least 51 runs, then he will break Shikhar Dhawan’s record and become India’s leading run scorer in the Champions Trophy. Kohli has 651 runs to his name in 15 Champions Trophy matches played so far, whereas Dhawan finished his career with 701 runs in 10 matches for Men in Blue.
In addition to that, Kohli will also have a chance to become India’s leading run scorer in ODIs against New Zealand, the second leading run scorer in ODIs, the batter with the most ODI centuries against New Zealand, and also the second most successful fielder in ODIs.
