NEW DELHI: India’s head coach Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli shared a warm embrace after Kohli achieved another milestone in his career on the third day of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy series opener in Perth.
With India in a challenging position after losing a few quick wickets, Kohli stepped up with his trademark intensity and determination.
Kohli played with his usual confidence and silenced his critics with a powerful sweep shot that raced to the boundary for four.
At first, he didn’t realize he had reached the century mark, but once the umpire signaled the four, Kohli celebrated his 81st international hundred with joy.
Kohli’s wife, Anushka Sharma, was visibly emotional as the Indian team and support staff stood up to applaud and acknowledge his accomplishment.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) shared a video on social media platform X, highlighting the team’s reaction to Kohli ending his century drought after 16 innings.
As Kohli made his way back to the dressing room, he and Gambhir shared a heartfelt hug, reflecting the emotions of the moment.
Gambhir and Kohli have had their differences in the past during the Indian Premier League (IPL), but this gesture indicated a new chapter in their relationship.
Speaking after the century, Virat gave credit to his wife for standing by his side.
“Anushka has been right by my side through thick and thin. She knows everything that goes on behind the scenes, what goes on in the head when you don’t play as well, you make a few mistakes after getting yourself in.”
“I just wanted to contribute to the team’s cause. I do not want to hang around just for the sake of it. I take pride in performing for the country. Feels amazing. The fact that she is here makes it more special.”
Acting captain Jasprit Bumrah recalled Kohli and Nitish Kumar Reddy to the field briefly after Kohli’s century celebration.
This century marked a significant personal milestone for Kohli, as it was his 100th hundred in professional cricket across all formats.
In Test cricket, Kohli has now amassed 30 centuries in 119 matches, accumulating 9,145 runs at an impressive average of 48.13, with 30 centuries and 31 fifties.
