After earning the honor of being the cover athlete for Madden NFL 25, San Francisco 49ers star running back Christian McCaffrey has added another accolade.
On Tuesday, McCaffrey was announced as the latest member of the coveted 99 Club in Madden, making him the first running back in 49ers history to earn the distinction. McCaffrey is the second player to receive a 99 overall rating this week, joining star receiver Tyreek Hill of the Miami Dolphins.
McCaffrey is coming off an immaculate 2023 campaign in which he was named NFL Offensive Player of the Year after leading the league with a career-high 1,459 rushing yards and 2,023 total yards from scrimmage. He scored 21 total touchdowns, 14 coming on the ground and seven through the air.
After his banner year, McCaffrey was rewarded with a two-year contract extension worth $38 million that reset the running back market. The deal added $8 million to his salary for the 2024 and 2025 seasons and gave him an additional $24 million in guaranteed money.
McCaffrey hopes his deal sets a precedent at the running back position, which has been depreciated in recent years.
“I think it’s really important,” McCaffrey said at the time of his extension. “I think running backs have been undervalued for a long time now and hopefully this is a step in the right direction.”
Still, McCaffrey might be the only running back in the NFL worthy of a 99 overall rating in Madden NFL 25. EA Sports is typically stingy with handing out the elite rating, as only five players were given the distinction ahead of the release of Madden NFL 24.
It will be fun to watch who else is given the honor of joining McCaffrey and Hill ahead of the highly anticipated release of Madden NFL 25 on Aug. 16.
