Next Gen ATP Finals presented by PIF—Saudi Arabia—Luca Van Assche joined American Alex Michelsen in the semifinals of the Next Gen ATP Finals in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia on Friday, defeating Nishesh Basavareddy 3-4(2), 4-3(7), 4-2, 4-2.
Needing two hours to advance, Van Assche struck 11 aces, won 87 percent of his first serve points and broke the serve of his American opponent on three occasions.
The Frenchman, now 20-years-old and ranked No. 134 in the world, will join Alex Michelsen in Saturday’s semifinals. Michelsen improved to 3-0 in the group stage after defeating No. 4 seed Juncheng Shang after just 20 minutes. Shang retired after dealing with a cold earlier in the week.
Van Assche will face off against Joao Fonseca on Saturday, while Michelson will await the winner of top seed Arthur Fils or Learner Tien.
Both Fils and Tien stand at 1-1 in the Group Stages. The day’s final match will feature Jakub Mensik taking on Fonseca.
