Utah’s running back room has been hit hard by transfer portal attrition, but on Sunday, the Utes added at the position via the transfer portal.
New Mexico State running back Mike Washington announced his commitment to Kyle Whittingham’s program on social media.
The 6-foot-2, 215-pound Washington ran for 713 yards and eight touchdowns last season as a junior for the Aggies, while adding nine receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.
Washington spent one season at New Mexico State — he transferred there after playing three seasons at Buffalo, a few hours from his Utica, New York, home.
He had two 100-yard rushing games last season — Washington ran for 152 yards and two touchdowns against Western Kentucky, and he had 130 yards and a touchdown in the season finale against UTEP.
Over his four seasons playing college football, Washington has rushed for 1,832 yards and 18 touchdowns.
Washington is the sixth transfer commit for the Utes thus far — he was the second on Sunday, after Mississippi State wide receiver Creed Whittemore pledged his commitment to the Utes.
Utah’s other transfer portal additions thus far also include New Mexico quarterback Devon Dampier, Garden City cornerback Jeremiah Caldwell, Missouri punter Orion Phillips and Oregon linebacker Jaxson Jones.
Adding players to the running back room has been a priority for the Utes this offseason, as Utah lost leading rusher Micah Bernard and Charlie Vincent to graduation and saw three running backs hit the portal.
