Following the departure of Matt Entz to become the head coach at Fr,esno State last month, USC football needed a new linebackers coach. The Trojans officially have their guy, and it’s a stunning hire to say the least. On Saturday morning, the Trojans officially announced Rob Ryan as their new linebackers coach. Ryan previously spent 12 seasons as a defensive coordinator in the NFL, including stints with the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys, and New Orleans Saints.
Prior to that, Ryan won two Super Bowls as the linebackers coach of the New England Patriots in the early 2000s. During his stint in New England, Ryan coached star linebackers Teddy Bruschi and USC legend Willie McGinest.
For the past three seasons, Ryan has served as a senior defensive analyst for the Raiders. USC will be his first college job since he was the defensive coordinator at Oklahoma State from 1997-1999.
Ryan’s twin brother, Rex is also a longtime football coach. He spent seven seasons as an NFL head coach with the New York Jets and Buffalo Bills. Their father Buddy, who passed away in 2016, was also a longtime football coach, and is considered one of the greatest defensive minds of all time.
