Multiple American men and women will feature in a Grand Slam semi-finals for the first time in 21 years as the last four of the US Open are set to clash starting on Thursday (5 September).
Leading the US onslaught is Jessica Pegula, who, at 30, will make her first semi-final appearance in a Slam after stunning the No. 1 women’s seed Iga Swiatek in straight sets on Wednesday at Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Pegula has yet to drop a set at the tournament, and has won 14 of her last 15 matches. She will face unseeded Karolina Muchova of the Czech Republic – who also has not dropped a set here – on Thursday.
The other American woman still standing, Emma Navarro, plays No. 2 seed and reigning two-time Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka.
The two men from the States, Taylor Fritz and Frances Tiafoe, square off against each other on Friday. The last American man to reach a major final was Andy Roddick in 2009 at Wimbledon where he lost to Roger Federer.
Twelfth-seeded Fritz, who has reached his first Slam semi-final, has a 6-1 edge in head-to-heads against his good friend Tiafoe.
The top men’s seed, Jannik Sinner, ousted 2021 champion Daniil Medvedev in four sets on Wednesday and will next take on Jack Draper, who became the first British man to reach a US Open semi-final since Andy Murray in 2012, when he won the title.
The last time two American men and women each advanced to a Grand Slam semis was in 2003, when Roddick and Olympic champions Andre Agassi, Lindsay Davenport and Jennifer Capriati made it this deep.
