The Cleveland Browns move forward into Week 7 of the 2024 NFL season with little to play for despite a relatively down AFC this season. Tuesday, the Browns traded away WR Amari Cooper in the first of what could be many roster moves looking toward the future.
The albatross for Cleveland continues to be QB Deshaun Watson. His play has led to the worst offense in a decade and has made that side of the ball unwatchable. Despite that, HC Kevin Stefanski is sticking with Watson as his starter.
The only out for the Browns would be if the latest lawsuit brought against Watson, adding to a long list previously settled, could lead to the guarantees in his contract being voided.
Shortly after the lawsuit was filed, attorney Tony Buzbee stated that the plaintiff would speak to the NFL, with a “video to share that will be pertinent,” around the end of September. It is unknown if that interview took place as Watson settled that lawsuit with Buzbee, who is now representing alleged victims in Puff Daddy/Diddy lawsuits, noting that “the settlement is confidential.”
While it was assumed that the NFL’s investigation would close due to the confidential nature of that settlement, commissioner Roger Goodell noted that the league is still reviewing the case:

With Watson already suspended for 11 games for very similar cases, the NFL might believe it has enough information to enforce more punishment from the latest case despite the settlement. The league is under no obligation to make their decision within a certain timeframe which could lead it to drag into the offseason.
