UConn women’s basketball delivered a 96-36 shellacking of the Seton Hall Pirates in an eventful day at Gampel Pavilion on Sunday. The 60-point win is the team’s largest margin of victory since 2020-21.
With a jumper from the free throw line in the second quarter, Paige Bueckers reached 2,000 points in her career — becoming the fastest Husky to the milestone and the 12th overall. She finished with 18 points on 6-10 shooting — including a 4-6 day from three — and also recorded a team-high seven assists.
Aubrey Griffin made her season debut after going down with a torn ACL on Jan. 3, 2024. While she was limited to just 10 minutes in her first game in 381 days, the sixth-year forward still put up three points and four rebounds.
A big day from UConn’s Big Three led the way. Sarah Strong (23 points), Azzi Fudd (18) and Bueckers combined for 43 of the team’s 56 points in the first half and 49 of 96 overall. All 12 Huskies scored in the win.
UConn dominated from the opening tip. Strong scored on the Huskies’ first two possessions to help build an early 10-2 lead and they never looked back. UConn closed the quarter on an 16-2 run and kept it going into the second period.
At one point, the Huskies deployed a full-court press and forced Seton Hall into turnovers on five of their next seven possessions. The visitors only scored one basket over the final 7:50 of the half while UConn piled on 24 points of its own in that same span. That sent the Huskies into the locker room with a commanding 56-16 advantage.
Unlike previous contests, UConn didn’t take its foot off the gas after the break. The Huskies came out with an 8-0 burst and soon pushed the gap over 50. By the end of the third quarter, UConn led by a staggering 58 points.
With the reserves in for the fourth quarter, the Huskies ended up with a 60-point victory.
UConn improves to 17-2 overall and 8-0 in Big East play with the win. Next, the Huskies will host Villanova at Gampel Pavilion on Wednesday.
