Despite a lackluster first half, UConn women’s basketball sailed past the Seton Hall Pirates 91-49 at Walsh Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
The Huskies came out flat in the first 20 minutes but rebounded to out-score the hosts 50-23 in the second half.
Paige Bueckers led the way with 23 points and surpassed Diana Taurasi in ninth place on UConn’s all-time scoring list in the process. She also put up nine rebounds and five assists. Four others joined her in double-figures.
Kaitlyn Chen had 15 points while Ashlynn Shade finished with 14. Aubrey Griffin put together another big performance at her parents’ alma mater with 15 points on a perfect 5-5 in just 18 minutes of action. Sarah Strong also added 10 points.
The Huskies shot 63 percent from the field and went to the free throw line 24 times — a season-high.
The first half was defined by runs from both sides. Seton Hall scored the first five points of the game, then UConn came back with eight straight itself. The Huskies appeared to pull away with a 12-0 burst but then allowed a 10-0 run from the hosts.
From there, UConn put its foot down. The Huskies piled up nine of 11 points then followed it with an 8-0 spurt. A jumper from Bueckers sent them into the locker room with a 15-point lead.
Despite the gap, UConn didn’t exactly play great through the first 20 minutes. The Huskies lacked intensity from the jump and never shifted into gear in the opening half.
“No momentum carried over into this game. No momentum at all,” Geno Auriemma told SNY at the half. “Kids are immature today, man. We go down there and get a great win and they think that win is going to make these guys roll over… This is nonsense.”
UConn responded out of the break. In the third quarter, the Huskies out-scored the hosts 30-13 and closed on a 20-3 run. They kept their foot on the gas in the final period on their way to a 52-point victory.
With the win, UConn improves to 25-3 overall and 15-0 in the Big East. Next, the Huskies will head on their final road trip of the regular season with a trip to Butler on Saturday.
