Martin Kaymer is one of a handful of members to have won a major championship that plays in the LIV Golf league. He won both the 2010 PGA Championship and the 2014 U.S. Open.
His exceptional play at that time briefly had Kaymer on top of the golf world as the No. 1 ranked player. However, age and lack of success led to him finding his way onto the PGA Tour’s rival circuit.
Maybe all of the money thrown around over there prompted Kaymer to lose touch with fiscal reality.
The 40-year-old confirmed on Tuesday that his Cleeks GC announced the launch of a collaboration with fashion designer Martin Key, per GolfMagic.
Key has created a ‘weekend bag’ handcrafted in Italy that catches the eye. Unfortunately for Kaymer, so did the price tag.
“At Cleeks Golf Club, we honour the traditions of golf while embracing a modern approach to the game and lifestyle,” Kaymer said of the bag.
“This weekend bag is more than just an accessory; it represents our dedication to quality, heritage, and a refined sense of style that we carry on and off the course. It reflects the distinct identity of Cleeks Golf Club, setting us apart from the rest and offering something truly unique.”
The cost: $4,800 USD. Yes, you read that right. It is nearly five grand for this weekend bag.
That prompted fans on social media to go trolling.
“Only if there’s 5 grand cash in large bills inside,” one post read.
“I just lost my $4800 travel bag this will be perfect,” another one chimed in, comically.
“You’d have to be a Saudi Prince to afford this….oh wait, yeah makes sense,” X user Zaggy wrote.
MT21 piled on, referencing the lack of understanding: “Get more tone deaf, you can’t.”
There are dozens and dozens of similar reactions from everyday golf fans. Some point to the fact that you can literally buy several entire sets of clubs for that amount of money. Others double down on LIV Golf’s elitist approach financially.
Kaymer has earned an estimated $30 million in career earnings. But that should be no excuse for appearing to sound so tone-deaf.
It is just another bad look for LIV Golf.
