Duke basketball continued its dominance with a 97-60 blowout win at Miami, but that overwhelming performance was overshadowed by the injury of Tyrese Proctor.
Proctor, a junior for the second-ranked Blue Devils (24-3, 16-1 ACC), exited the first half with a left knee injury and didn’t return.
The Aussie has more Duke experience than any player on the current roster. Proctor scored seven points to become the 70th Duke player to surpass 1,000 career points before an awkward landing in the final minute of the first half against the Hurricanes (6-22, 2-15).
Proctor’s setback comes at a time when the Blue Devils are dealing with the shoulder injury of Maliq Brown, who is expected to miss a few weeks.
That was the bad, but here’s the good from Duke’s blowout win at Miami.
Duke star Cooper Flagg had 16 points on 6-of-9 shooting, with six assists and five rebounds in 27 minutes at Miami. Flagg had 11 points and four assists in the first half. Overall, Duke had 20 assists on 32 baskets against the Canes. Since scoring 11 points at Syracuse, the projected No. 1 pick in the 2025 NBA Draft has averaged 18.8 points over the past six games.
Duke freshman Kon Knueppel scored a career-high 25 points against Miami at Cameron Indoor Stadium on Jan. 14. Knueppel ran it back with 20 points against the Hurricanes in Coral Gables, reaching the 20-point mark for the fourth time this season. He made 10 of 13 shots (76.9%) from 3-point range in two games against the Canes. Duke made 15 treys at Miami.
It was a milestone night for third-year Duke coach Jon Scheyer, who has a 79-21 record (79%) through 100 games as Mike Krzyzewski’s successor. The Blue Devils remain elite at Cameron Indoor Stadium, with a 46-3 record in Durham under Scheyer. But Duke has improved tremendously on the road in each season. Following a 4-6 road record in Scheyer’s debut season and a 7-4 record on the road last season, Duke is 9-1 in true road games this season.
Fayetteville native Isaiah Evans continues to take advantage of his opportunities, exploding for 16 points in the first half at Miami. Evans made five 3-pointers, including a four-point play, in 13 minutes to help Duke take a 47-32 halftime lead. The freshman wing is averaging 16.6 points and has made 13 of 19 shots (68%) over the past three games.
