Truro City manager John Askey praised the determination of his side as they came from a goal down to beat struggling Aveley 2-1 in National League South.

Brooklyn Kabongolo headed Aveley in front after an hour, but Sam Sanders replied two minutes later as he got on the end of a Christian Oxlade-Chamberlain throw.

Tom Harrison got the winner in the 74th minute as he headed in another long throw from Oxlade-Chamberlain as Truro moved up to third place on goal difference.

“It was tough today. The pitch is very bobbly at the moment and nobody really looked comfortable on the ball,” Askey told BBC Radio Cornwall.

“But we’ve kept at it, gone a goal behind and full credit to the players for showing guts and determination and getting the win.”

The game was the first in a run of fixtures against sides below the Tinners in the table.

They are only two points off leaders Torquay United and level with second-placed Boreham Wood, although the Cornish club has played more games than the sides above them.

“I think it’s the most important time now,” Askey added.

“We’ve got one or two games coming up that on paper are very winnable, and if we can in the next three or four games get a head of steam then it’ll set us up nicely and push us up the table.

“One or two teams at the top have come unstuck a little bit, and that will happen, but we’ve just got to concentrate on ourselves now and hopefully we play better than what we’ve played today.

“But as long as we keep winning, that’s the main thing.”
