President Donald Trump is returning to Florida for the first time after his second inauguration to spend the weekend and attend the GOP’s January retreat, which is being held at Trump’s Doral golf club.

On Friday, Jan. 24, Trump and first lady Melania Trump visited Asheville, North Carolina, to tour the damage from Hurricane Helene last year, before flying to Southern California to see what the horrific waves of wildfires have done to the region.

Trump National Doral Golf Club in Miami, a “luxury public golf club featuring four championship golf courses, world-class amenities and state-of-the-art facilities providing the ultimate golf experience,” according to the website.

Room rates run from nearly $500 for guest rooms to nearly $9,000 for the Presidential Suite.

What happens at the GOP January retreat?

Party retreats are a time for lawmakers to meet together and hammer out policies and the best ways to get them enacted.

On this retreat, House Republicans, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, are expected to work out how best to create one bill to encompass the new administration’s major priorities — advancing his immigration policies, boosting domestic energy production and implementing an expansive new tax plan — that will satisfy Trump and pass despite the tiny margin the GOP has in the House.

Johnson said Thursday, Jan. 23, that he was hoping to finalize plans for a “blueprint” for a massive party-line reconciliation at the retreat, according to Politico. The House Budget Committee, which handles writing instructions on the bill, is scheduled to meet next week. Johnson also said he hoped to present options to avoid a debt default.

House Democrats will conduct their 2025 retreat at the Lansdowne resort in Loudoun County, Virginia, in March to make strategies on how to progress under Trump and regain a House majority.

When is President Trump arriving back in Florida?

According to his schedule, Trump is scheduled to arrive in Miami, Florida, on the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 25. It is his first trip back to his home state since Inauguration Day 2025.

According to reports from Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, the Trump administration announced the 2020 G7 summit of world leaders would be held at Trump Doral, saying the Secret Service preferred it, but the plan was changed days later after complaints from members of both parties. The organization said political groups spent $1.8 million at Trump Doral during the president’s first term.

Trump spent a great deal of time at his own properties during his first presidency, reportedly overcharging the Secret Service for their rooms, according to documents obtained by a House committee in 2022. In January 2024, The New York Times reported on documents from House Democrats showing that Trump’s businesses received at least $7.8 million from foreign governments during his first term, including Trump International Hotel in Washington, D.C.; Trump International Hotel in Las Vegas; Trump Tower on Fifth Avenue in New York; and Trump World Tower at 845 United Nations Plaza in New York.
