DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Troy entered Tuesday’s final round of the Daytona Beach Intercollegiate tied with Stetson for the team lead; 18 holes later, the Trojans left the LPGA International Golf Course with a commanding 19-shot victory for their second team title of the season.
Troy shot even-par in Tuesday’s final round, eight shots better than the next closest team, as 13 of the other 14 teams in the field all shot 10-over or worse on the day. The Trojans won the fall opener at the Argent Financial Classic; it’s the first time since 2022 that Troy has won multiple events in a season.
Brantley Scott, who missed all fall with an injury, won his first career tournament title, shooting 1-under to edge out North Alabama’s Xing Luo by two shots. Scott played as steady as a golf tournament as you could ask for, with four birdies, three bogeys and 47 pars to claim individual medalist honors.
“Great to get a win this week on an incredibly tough golf course,” head coach
Clay Bounds said. “Our guys stuck to the plan from the beginning of the week that the course was going to play hard and that par was a good score, and it certainly was. I am proud of the way they fought and battled through adverse conditions.
“Also, I couldn’t be more proud of
Brantley Scott,” Bounds said. “The way he has comeback from injury last semester to get his first collegiate win this week is truly incredible. Just couldn’t be more proud.”
Nick Fowlkes was right on his teammate’s heels as he tied for fourth, just four shots off the pace. Fowlkes was 3-over on the day with a pair of birdies to compliment his five bogeys.
Troy closed out the week at 13-over as a team, besting a top-five that featured Stetson (+32), Florida Atlantic (+36), UCF (+36) and Campbell (+37).
The round of the day for the Trojans and almost the entire tournament was the bag of
Lee Poppell, who fired a 4-under 68 thanks to an impressive front nine. He birdied his first three holes and made the turn at 5-under; his round was the second-best in the field for the tournament and propelled him into a tie for ninth place.
Jake Springer erased any hopes of an opponent comeback as he carded four birdies over his final eight holes, which erased a 6-over front nine into a respectable 74 for the day and a tie for 17
th overall.
Pablo Gracia carded a birdie on the par-5 second and shot 77 en route to a tie for 31
st place.
