The Triple Crown Tracker checks in with the horses who raced in the 2024 Kentucky Derby, Preakness and Belmont, keeping up with what they have done since the classics.
2024 Kentucky Derby
In two starts since the Kentucky Derby, Grand Mo the First has returned to the lawn, and the results have been strong. The Victor Barboza Jr. trainee won an ungraded stakes at Gulfstream last month, and then stepped back up to the graded level in Saturday’s Virginia Derby (G3) at Colonial Downs. He tracked an honest pace in the 1 1/8-mile grass race, and though he could not stave off the late run of Deterministic, he finished second by a neck.
Track Phantom, unraced since an 11th-place finish in the Kentucky Derby, returned to the work tab for the first time since the run for the roses. The Steve Asmussen trainee, who won the Gun Runner and the Lecomte (G3) during the winter meet at Fair Grounds, drilled an easy four furlongs Monday at Churchill Downs.

2024 Preakness Stakes
Uncle Heavy hit the board for the first time since his win in the Withers (G3) when he was third behind Gould’s Gold in the 1 1/16-mile Smarty Jones on Aug. 24 at Parx. He stalked in range behind the leading pair of Gould’s Gold and Just Step on It, and though he could not reel them in, he chased on to finish third. He was 2 1/2 lengths behind winning Gould’s Gold but seven lengths ahead of fourth-place Mugatu, a fellow alumnus of the Preakness.
Imagination returned to the races for his first start since running off the board in the Woody Stephens (G1), stretching out for the Shared Belief Stakes at Del Mar. He tracked the pace and made a bid toward his odds-on stablemate Muth in the lane but flattened out for third in the one-mile dirt race, 3 1/4 lengths behind the favorite.

2024 Belmont Stakes
Protective, the only maiden to run in the 2024 Triple Crown, shed that label in his seventh career start. In a 1 1/4-mile dirt race at Saratoga that was washed off the turf, he was bet down to 1-20 favoritism. The Todd Pletcher trainee stalked the pace, took over for the final quarter-mile, and ran on to hold by 1 1/4 lengths over Elko County.
