WILMINGTON, N.C. – Three members of the Duke women’s golf team – Katie Li, Anna Cañado Espinal and Andie Smith — carded top 10 finishes at the Landfall Tradition, while the Blue Devils turned in a runner-up placement to conclude the fall campaign. 
 
Li was tied for fifth, while Espinal posted her first career top 10 finish with her tied for ninth finish and Smith turned in her second consecutive top 10 placement for the Blue Devils as she also tied for ninth. 
 
As a team, Duke shot a 301 on Sunday in the final round and finished one shot behind Florida State (862) with a 1-under, 863, for the second-place ledger as the field dealt with tougher conditions to conclude action.
 
How It Happened

• Sophomore Katie Li carded rounds of 67, 70 and 77 for a 2-under, 214, which marked her second top five finish of the fall season.  Li, a native of Basking Ridge, N.J., hit a season-low four fairways on the day, after hitting 17 the first two rounds combined.  She opened the day on hole No. 1 and made the turn with a 3-over, 39.  She totaled a birdie on the 488-yard, par-5 seventh as she hit her pitching wedge from 120 yards to three feet.  Li went on to play the back nine at 2-over, 38, with a birdie on No. 18. 
• Freshman Anna Cañado Espinal finished the fall season with her best tournament as a Blue Devil as she collected three straight rounds of even or under par with scores of 71, 72 and 72 for a 1-under, 215, to finish tied for ninth.  It marked her first collegiate top 10 placement.  On the day, Espinal parred hole No. 2 and No. 3 to kick off her round.  After a bogey on No. 4, she turned in back-to-back birdies on No. 5 and No. 6 to get to 1-under early.  Espinal got up-and-down from 75 yards for birdie on the fifth and then drained a 13-footer for birdie on the sixth.  Following five pars, Espinal birdied No. 12 to move to 2-under, after draining a 16-footer.  The Barcelona, Spain product closed the day with five pars and two bogeys to finish with a 72. 
• Coming off notching her first collegiate win in the previous tournament, junior Andie Smith backed it up with her fourth career top 10 finish with rounds of 69, 71 and 75 for a 1-under, 215. Smith, who is from Hobe Sound, Fla., parred her opening hole and then rolled in a 20-footer for birdie on No. 2.  She closed the day with 12 pars and four bogeys to finish with a 75.  Smith turned in an impressive six up-and-downs on the day. 
• Freshman Carla De Troia concluded the weekend with rounds of 75, 70 and 77 to finish tied for 37th with a 222.  On the front nine Sunday, she shot 4-over, 40, and then was 1-over, 37, on the back with a birdie on No. 13. 
• Senior Rylie Heflin turned in a 78 in the final round to also finish in a tie for 37th with a 222.  After a pair of pars to open the morning, Heflin dropped seven shots over the next nine holes to fall to 7-over early.  She regrouped and finished strong to shoot 1-under over the final seven holes with a birdie on No. 16. 
• Playing as an individual for the first time as a Blue Devil, freshman Martina Yu closed the weekend with a 79. 

 
 
Notes

• Katie Li now owns three top five finishes in 14 career tournaments. 
• Anna Cañado Espinal’s 54-hole score was a career low.  She had totaled only one round of even or under par prior to the Landfall Tradition and notched three this week. 
• Espinal hit a career-best 16 greens, while hitting 11 fairways and rolling 32 putts in the final round.
• Duke led the field with a 5-under score on par-3 holes and four eagles. 

What is Next

• The Blue Devils wrap up the fall season and will next compete in the UCF Challenge Feb. 2-4 at the Eagle Creek Golf Club in Orlando, Fla.
