Trek Brewing in Newark is adding golf simulators that will open at the end of February

Get those golf swings ready, Newark.

Next month, Trek Brewing Co., 1486 Granville Road, will open golf simulators, called The Links at Trek Brewing. There will be three bays, each fitted with more than 60 golf courses, including St. Andrews and Pebble Beach, among other famous locations.

Up to six people can play at a time in each bay, which features driving range simulations, target practice games and other golf-related activities. John Ream, opener of Trek Brewing, told The Advocate the brewery plans to open the bays to the public around the end of February, barring weather setbacks.

“We had this large event space in the brewery, and it was really underutilized, so we’ve been looking for something to do in there,” Ream said. “We went through a lot of different ideas, and these golf simulators were one idea that was thrown out (there).

“Right now, there’s a lot of courses closing locally, and land is getting developed, so there’s fewer courses available. So it was something we thought could be a real thing. We started looking around, doing some research on them and thought it could be a real great addition not only to our space but (also) the community.”

Earlier this month, the brewery in a Facebook post announced its plan to open the bays. Ream said he and his team have worked on the project for nearly a year, experiencing some setbacks during construction.

The project’s contractor, Compton Construction, finished installing the bays this month. It’s also adding a second bar in the space while the brewery plans to introduce a cocktail program to go along with the simulators, Ream said.

The simulators’ hours will mirror the brewery’s — 4 to 9 p.m. Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sundays. Ream said he tentatively plans to expand those hours sometime this year.

Ream and his wife, Kristin, first opened the brewery around 2017. It hosts trivia nights and other community events while offering beer and food. The Reams donate 10% of brewery sales generated on Thursdays to nonprofits.

“It’s been a wonderful ride,” Ream said. “Being part of the community, getting to know so many people that become part of our lives, being able to give back through the community and everyone that has come out and supported us — we’re so thankful for all that.”

The brewery has not yet finalized price points to access the simulators. Ream mentioned public feedback about them has been considerably positive since the brewery made the announcement.

“It’ll be a fun space for folks to come and have a good time,” Ream said. “You don’t have to be an avid golfer to have fun on these — there’s different games you can set up and play. This will be a great gathering spot. We’ll be able to do some indoor golf leagues as well, so it should be another great community space.”
