This upcoming weekend, Travis Kelce and the Kansas City Chiefs will begin their NFL playoff run with a home matchup against the Houston Texans.
As the star tight end looks to collect a third consecutive Super Bowl and further enhance his resume as a Pro Football Hall of Famer, there’s another team chasing a championship that he’s throwing his support behind.
The Cleveland Heights, Ohio native said in an appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show” Monday that he’s keeping an eye on Ohio State as it competes in the College Football Playoff and prepares for the national championship game against Notre Dame on Jan. 20.
Though he never played for the Buckeyes, he has been rooting for them to win the program’s ninth national title.
“I’m just an Ohio football guy, man,” Kelce said. “I’m cheering for all Ohio football, baby.”
Long before he achieved NFL stardom and achieved worldwide fame for his relationship with pop star Taylor Swift, Kelce was a standout at Cleveland Heights High School and went on to spend five seasons at Cincinnati. The Bearcats never played against Ohio State during his college career and have only played twice since 2007, meaning Kelce seldom has to deal with dueling allegiances.
Though he was lightly recruited coming out of high school, Kelce has gone on to one of the most successful careers ever for a tight end.
During his 12-year NFL career, he has caught 1,004 passes for 12,151 yards and 77 touchdowns while helping lead an explosive Chiefs to three Super Bowl victories. He’s third in yards and fifth in receiving touchdowns among tight ends in NFL history.
“If football’s going on, I’m watching it, man,” Kelce said when asked if he has been paying attention to the playoff. “Especially when the Buckeyes are making a run at it.”
