One thing’s for sure, at least this week: the Portland Trail Blazers aren’t stationary. When it comes to the NBA’s weekly power rankings of all 30 teams by NBA.com writer John Schuhmann, the Trail Blazers didn’t stand still but managed to climb up to No. 27. It’s not much to write home about (they ranked No. 28 last week), but it’s still something… right?
The Blazers finished this past week 1-2, falling to the Phoenix Suns (Sunday), beating the Denver Nuggets (Thursday), and losing to the San Antonio Spurs (Saturday). Portland’s 132-108 loss to the Dallas Mavericks Monday evening didn’t factor into these power rankings.
The Blazers’ victory against Denver snapped a six-game losing streak and was one that Blazers fans must have thoroughly enjoyed. Late-game heroics by Anfernee Simons (if you missed it, you can watch the last 4:56 here) lifted Portland to a 126-124 victory. It was a bit of nostalgia, à la the bygone era of “Dame Time.”
As Schuhmann pointed out in the power rankings write-up, Portland ranks 28th in the NBA with a 107.4 offensive rating, and 26th with a 116.5 defensive rating. Ultimately, the Blazers’ goal is to reverse those numbers and have a positive differential. Right now they sit at -9.1.
Schuhmann also noted while the Blazers struggle at defensive rebounding, they’ve shown success on the offensive glass.
[T]he Blazers outscored the Nuggets by 13 (21-8) on second-chance points in the two-point win on Thursday. Portland ranks last in defensive rebounding percentage, but is sixth in offensive rebounding percentage, with Clingan ranking third among 340 players who’ve averaged at least 10 minutes per game. Two other rookies — Zach Edey and Yves Missi — are also in the top six.
Following the Monday road loss to the Mavs, the Blazers return home to challenge the Utah Jazz in Portland Thursday. The Blazers will round out the week with a second contest against Dallas, this time in Portland Saturday.
